Action of Medicine:

The common buckthorn produces black, shiny, four-sided berries with an acrid taste. A syrup is made from these berries, and forms the Rhamni succus of the old school. Symptoms were observed in a boy poisoned by eating the berries.
Copious watery stools. Nausea and severe vomiting. Rham-cath., in doses of a few drops, is a useful palliative in cases of constipation. The ileo-cecal symptoms seem to indicate it as a possible remedy in cases of appendicitis. Milne noted that it was formerly given in dropsy.
