Action of Medicine:

• The effects of opium as shown in the insensibility of the nervous system, the depression drowsiness, stupor, painlessness and torpor, general sluggishness and lack of vital reaction.
• All complaints are characterized by sopor. They are painless and are accompanied by heavy, stupid sleep and stertorous breathing.
• Face is red, bloated, swollen, dark suffused and hot.
• Hanging down of lower jaw.
• Opium lessens voluntary movements, contracts pupils, depresses higher intellectual powers, lessens self control and power of concentration, judgement; stimulates the imagination, checks all secretions except that of the skin.
• Vertigo with lightness of head in old people.
• Obstinate constipation; no desire to go to stool. Round, hard, black balls. Faeces protrude and recede.
• Hot perspiration over whole body except lower limbs.
• Worse- heat, during and after sleep. Better- cold things, constant walking.
