Calcium, the most abundant mineral in the body, is a structural component of bones, teeth and soft tissue and is crucial for proper functioning of musculoskeletal system, nervous system, many metabolic processes in the body and normal blood clotting. Dietary calcium requirements depend in part upon whether the body is growing or making new bone or is prone to bone loss. Requirements are therefore greatest during childhood, adolescence, pregnancy, breastfeeding and post-menopausal women.

Inadequate intake of dietary calcium produces no obvious symptoms in the short term as it is compensated by using bone stores of calcium. But, this gradually depletes bone stores, rendering the bones weak and prone to fracture (Osteoporosis). Calcium-deficient people look pale and listless, get tired easily and become lazy. In children Calcium deficiency leads to Rickets, weak bones and teeth. Prolonged deficiency can lead to decreased bone density, especially in post menopausal women due to drop in estrogen production.
