The skin is the largest organ of the body, serving as a protective barrier between the internal workings of the body and the environment. When that barrier is breached by superficial injuries(abrasions, lacerations, cuts, burns, insect bites) & various skin eruptions, it leaves open an opportunity for bacteria and other potentially harmful microscopic things to enter the bodily system. Infection is another major risk of leaving even superficial wounds untreated.

One of the first matters to address with minor wounds is cleansing the wound. Cleansing is important for incisions that are caused by sharp objects, such as knives or broken glass. However, it is even more important in abrasion injuries, in which the skin's outer layers have been scraped away by abrasion against a rough object, such as when elbows and arms scrape against pavement during a fall.

The main rationale for using antiseptics on open wounds is cleansing, prevention and treatment of infection thus promoting healing. Some chemical based antiseptic washes available may cause irritation & allergies to the sensitive skin and create an added problem to already paining wound.

Calendual Ointment

Wound is defined as any type of damage or break on the surface of skin. It can occur due to trauma, skin conditions or an underlying disease. There are various types of wounds:

Open wounds: These have an exposed underlying tissue and is open to outside environment. Open wounds includes the following -

• Incised wounds, which are caused by a clean sharp-edged object
• Lacerations are regular tear-like wounds caused by blunt trauma
• Abrasions where the superficial layer of skin is scraped off
• Puncture wounds, caused by an object puncturing theskin
• Penetration wounds, caused by an object, like knife, entering and coming out of skin

Closed wounds: These are not open to outside environment, and include-

• Hematomas, caused by damage to blood vessel causing blood to collect under the skin.
• Crush injuries

It is essential to properly clean the wound before closing and dressing it according to it'stype. Following steps should be followed for an open wound -

1. Stop the bleeding
2. Clean the wound with clean water and a saline solution
3. Close and dress the wound

Change the dressing every 24 hours

Action of Ingredients:

Calendula officinalis: C. officinalis exhibits antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, Phagocytosis of human granulocytes is known to be stimulated by polysaccharides in C. officinalis. It helps in rapid healing of wounds. Injuries, cuts, abrasions, lacerations, broken skin surface. Promotes healthy granulations and rapid healing by first intention. Prevents scar tissue formation. Antiseptic for sores, abscesses, infection at the site of a wounds. Arrests bleeding from wounds, especially to scalp, mouth. Burns, scalds, sunburns.

Dry skin or Xerosis is a very common skin problem and is often worse during the winter when environmental humidity is low. It can occur at all ages, in people with or without any other skin problems and it is one of the most common cause that leads to cracked heels and hands. Normally, healthy skin is coated with a thin layer of natural lipids or fatty substances. They keep in moisture, leaving the skin soft and supple but due to some reasons these fatty oils gets stripped off from the skin leaving it unprotected. Over washing of hands with ordinary soap, especially if done without moisturizing, use of chemicals in cleaning can also cause dryness and cracks in hands and standing for prolonged periods in a damp area such as a bathroom or change in walking posture can cause dry and cracked heels.
• Obesity - Being overweight may increase the pressure on the normal fat pad hence leading to cracked heels
• Ill fitting shoes.

Dry skin on palms or hands is characterized by taut, irritated skin that occurs with excessive sweating or may also be the result of an allergic reaction. The skin often appears red, coupled with itching. In Eczema-like conditions, the skin may also start to peel off. In weather related dry skin there will be a slight irritation while stretching hand. In more severe cases, untreated dry skin may lead to Eczema and Psoriasis, which can take a long time to heal. Dry skin on the heels is often a recurrent problem. It can affect either both the heels or one of the heel. But most commonly, cracked heels affect both the feet. The most common alerts include red or flaky patches; peeling or cracked skin; and discharge or bleeding. At times, the skin will also itch.
