What is Weakness?
Asthenia, also known as weakness, is the feeling of body fatigue or tiredness. It is best defined as a lack of energy to move muscles in the body. Weakness can be either temporary or permanent depending on the underlying cause.
Some of the most common causes of asthenia are-
- Thyroid disorder
- Depression or anxiety
- Sleep disorders
- Congestive heart failure
- Vitamin B12 deficiency
Less common causes of weakness include cancer, nerve or muscle injuries and stroke
Sign and symptoms
The symptomatology of weakness depends on the type, whether isolated or full body. In the case of isolated weakness, where a specific area of the body feels weak signs like delayed or slow movement, tremors, muscle twitching and muscle cramps are found. When the weakness is generalised, fever, flu like symptoms and pain in the affected area is experienced.
The diagnosis is based on the underlying cause of weakness. Certain blood investigations and urine examination is recommended. Imaging techniques like X rays, MRI, CT scans and ultrasound can differentiate the causes if the patient is experiencing pain in any of the affected areas. Electrocardiograms must be advised in case of cardiac disorders.
Treatment of the causative illness is the mainstay of management. Proper hydration must be maintained. Rest and nutritious diet can improve the condition over a period of time.
