What is Abdominal Pain?

Abdominal pain or stomach pain refers to discomfort in the space between the chest and pelvis. It is a common complaint which can be caused by trivial to life threatening conditions.

Abdominal pain is a common reason for visits to emergency accounting for 7-10% of all Emergency visits but in the majority of the cases it is mild and self-limiting.

Causes

Abdominal pain can be caused or complicated by a variety of factors. Some most common causes include-

• Gastroenteritis or stomach flu
• Gas or flatulence
• Irritable Bowel Syndrome
• Vomiting
• Gastritis
• Food intolerance
• Constipation
• Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
• Stomach or Peptic Ulcers
• Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis)
• Menstrual Cramps
• Endometriosis
• Urinary Tract Infections

Abdominal pain can also be a sign of serious medical conditions when it is sudden and severe or chronic (long standing). Hence, it needs proper evaluation and early initiation of appropriate treatment with your doctor. The tests commonly advised by the doctor include urine tests, stool tests, ultrasound abdomen, CT Scan and endoscopy according to the cause suspected.

Management

Preventive measures include - avoiding overeating, eating fiber-rich and fresh food, avoiding fatty food, maintaining a good water intake, general hygiene maintenance, and avoiding eating right before bedtime.
