Acute Sinusitis (Acute Rhinosinusitis) causes the cavities around nasal passages (sinuses) to become inflamed and swollen. This interferes with drainage and causes mucus to build up. Sinusitis is said to be acute if it lasts from 4-30 days and subacute if it lasts 4-12 weeks. A mild bout of Acute Sinusitis is common and many people will have some degree of Sinusitis with a cold. However, severe Acute Sinusitis is uncommon. Most people only ever have one or two bouts of Acute Sinusitis in their lives. However, some people have repeated (recurring) bouts of Acute Sinusitis.

Sinusitis that lasts more than eight weeks or keeps coming back, despite treatment is called Chronic Sinusitis. Chronic sinusitis may be caused by an infection, but it can also be caused by growths in the sinuses (Nasal Polyps) or by a deviated nasal septum.
