    Action of Medicine:

    • The posterior lobe of pituitary gland releases the oxytocin and antidiuretic hormones.
    • Useful in cases of diabetes insipidus. Antidiuretic hormone, or vasopressin, promotes the reabsorption of water in the kidneys.
    • It raises the blood pressure and plays a role in the water balance.
    • It constricts the arteries of the abdominal organs, therefore it is used to stop haemorrhage involving abdominal blood vessels.
    • Oxytocin causes uterine contractions at term. Used for the induction or stimulation of the labor.
    • It has been given to relieve painful breast engorgement. Promotes breast milk release during lactation.
